On March 8, 2010, a rare combination of cold air and a Mediterranean depression caused one of the heaviest snowfalls in decades across Barcelona and the Catalan coast.

The city collapsed around 4:00 PM as snow reached the beaches. Public transport was halted, except for the Barcelona Metro, which operated overnight to assist stranded commuters. Major roads like the Rondas were closed due to heavy ice and snow accumulation.
The storm's impact extended beyond the capital, with Girona suffering massive power outages affecting 200,000 customers. In the Maresme region, snow depths reached up to 88 cm in mountainous areas, while coastal towns saw waves up to 8 meters high.
