The new mixed company Rodalies de Catalunya was officially constituted this Monday in Barcelona with the aim of ending the chronic problems of delays and breakdowns suffered by the railway service in Catalonia.

The creation of this new entity is the direct result of political agreements reached between Catalan parties, such as Junts and ERC, with the PSOE and the PSC, who conditioned their investiture on addressing solutions for the precarious commuter train service, a problem that has persisted for over 25 years.

"It will not solve anything for the user in the short or medium term, as the company will take at least a year to become operational."

David Guerrero · Transport Infrastructure Expert
The transport infrastructure expert, David Guerrero, expressed his skepticism in conversation with Enric Sierra, deputy director of La Vanguardia. According to Guerrero, the most significant improvements expected in the coming months will be due to investments already underway and the arrival of new trains with double the capacity, rather than the new management structure.
Furthermore, there are doubts about the actual operational margin of the new company, as the majority of the board of directors is controlled by Renfe, the drivers will be the same, and the company responsible for the infrastructure, Adif, will maintain its functions. Despite this, Guerrero hopes that proximity management may provide greater sensitivity in resolving service deficiencies.
