Trains on the R2 Nord line, connecting the airport to Maçanet-Massanes via Barcelona and the Vallès Oriental, and the R11 (regional to Girona) have resumed their normal routes. This was made possible after Adif completed the filling of the large hole that opened on Wednesday in Vallbona on Saturday.
In parallel, the R3 line, which runs from L’Hospitalet de Llobregat to Puigcerdà via Barcelona, Granollers, Vic, and Ripoll, has begun to resume train circulation after being suspended all day Saturday due to a breakdown.
Renfe announced early Sunday morning the removal of the disruption on the R2 Nord. Adif had announced on Saturday the completion of the ground restoration work affected by the sinkhole, which occurred during the tunneling works of the line through Montcada. After conducting several test runs without passengers to verify the infrastructure's safety and proper functioning, a temporary speed limit has been established at the site of the hole.
Adif has confirmed that no significant movements or alterations have been detected in the ground, track bed, or nearby building structures, although monitoring of the railway infrastructure and surrounding area will continue.
The sinkhole, detected on Wednesday, reached a depth of 17 meters and a diameter of 19 meters. The incident caused machinery and construction materials to fall into the hole, leading to the precautionary suspension of rail traffic between Montcada i Reixac and Sant Andreu stations, affecting lines R2, R2 Nord, and R11. To stabilize the area, 365 cubic meters of concrete and subsequently 1,930 cubic meters of mortar were poured. The exact cause of the sinkhole is still under investigation.
Regarding the R3 line, train service between La Garriga and Puigcerdà has been restored. However, works between Barcelona and La Garriga will continue until January 2027. In the meantime, Renfe is maintaining a complementary bus service between Fabra i Puig and Puigcerdà for the sections still affected.
