The film, directed by the journalist and documentalist from Lleida David Moncasi, addresses the episode that marked a turning point in the Himalayas. Garra suffered the accident a few meters from the summit of Dhaulagiri, the seventh highest mountain on the planet, and was immobilized at nearly 8,000 meters.
The mountaineer survived for three nights in extreme conditions, accompanied only by the sherpa Keshab Gurung, without water or oxygen. The rescue operation mobilized unprecedented human and technical resources, coordinated from Lleida, Istanbul, and Everest Base Camp.
“"When considering the documentary, I was captivated by how many people mobilized to save Juanjo; this solidarity impulse is the most striking thing."
The documentary Rescate al límite features key mountaineering figures such as Juanito Oiartzábal, Edurne Pasaban, Ferran Latorre, Carlos Soria, Sebastián Álvaro, and Alex Txikón. It also includes the testimony of pilot Mauricio Follini, who managed to lift a person suspended from a cable up to 7,400 meters high.
Moncasi emphasizes the intimate nature of the project, based on footage recorded by Garra himself and the rescue teams. The director noted that the reunion in Kathmandu between Txikón and the sherpa Gurung, thirteen years later, serves as an exercise in memory and emotional closure.
