The municipal body emphasizes that prevention at home is essential to reduce the presence of these insects. The main recommendation for citizens is to conduct a weekly check of terraces, balconies, and gardens to avoid water accumulation in small containers, which act as breeding grounds.
The control program runs throughout the year, covering both public and private spaces. During the previous year, the ASPB inspected over 37,000 surveillance points, such as ornamental fountains and storm drains, carrying out thousands of treatments with biological products and larvicides to curb detected activity.
Although the risk of autochthonous transmission of diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, or Zika is considered very low in Barcelona, the agency reminds that the tiger mosquito is the main vector for these arboviruses. For this reason, they highlight the importance of protecting against bites and keeping environments free of stagnant water.
