The diagnosis was confirmed on Monday afternoon following several tests carried out at Vall d'Hebron Hospital, where Illa was admitted on Sunday. Pubic osteomyelitis is a bacterial infection located in the pelvic area that has caused severe inflammation, preventing him from moving his legs.
“"Perhaps there was inflammation of the joint and that is where the bacterium went to cause osteomyelitis."
Dr. Dolors Rodríguez, an infectious disease specialist, explained that the origin lies in the junction of the two pubic bones, an area that usually bears heavy loads and where small lesions can occur. It is at this fragile point that the bacterium infiltrated.
This infectious disease is caused by the bacterium Streptococcus dysgalactiae, which is naturally found in the flora of the human gastrointestinal tract. When the bacterium enters the bloodstream, it can infect the bones, although the location in the pubis is very uncommon, which complicated the initial diagnosis.
The treatment for President Illa will initially consist of two weeks of intravenous antibiotics from the hospital floor, and subsequently, a decision will be made on whether he continues to be admitted or is discharged to continue oral treatment at home, depending on his evolution.
