The Hospital Sant Pau has received the "Més del 50%: Perspectiva de Sexe i Gènere" award from the Spanish Society of Hospital Pharmacy (SEFH) for an innovative project in cardiac rehabilitation.

Dr. Patrícia Amorós, deputy pharmacist in the Cardiology Area of Hospital Sant Pau, accepted the award during the closing of the 71st National Congress of the SEFH in Maspalomas (Gran Canaria). The award recognizes the project "Pharmaceutical care and gender perspective in a Cardiac Rehabilitation Program for post-acute coronary syndrome patients".
The RecuperaSCA Cardiology program, in which the Sant Pau Hospital Pharmacy Service collaborates, aims to optimize pharmacological treatment and identify differential needs related to sex and gender in post-acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients.
"The initiative stems from the need to consider that, after an ACS, there may be differences in the clinical and pharmacotherapeutic profile of women and men, as well as in aspects such as treatment complexity, adverse effects, therapeutic adherence, or barriers to accessing cardiac rehabilitation programs," explains Dr. Amorós.
This recognition highlights "the incorporation of the sex and gender perspective into clinical practice and the role of the clinical pharmacist in identifying needs that may go unnoticed in routine care," according to Amorós.
The award, organized by SEFH and Organon, values projects implemented from a sex and gender perspective, seeking innovation, results, applicability, and the capacity for reproduction.
The first phase of the work retrospectively analyzed hospital discharges for ACS, identifying greater clinical and pharmacological complexity in women who returned to the Emergency Department, representing 67% of medication-related reconsultations, despite being 28% of the analyzed discharges.
The second phase, currently underway, coordinates professionals from Cardiology, Pharmacy, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Nutrition and Dietetics, and the User Experience Unit of the RecuperaSCA Program, led by Dr. Guiomar Mendieta. The role of the clinical pharmacist is incorporated for treatment reviews, medication education, identification of interactions, and detection of adverse effects with a gender perspective.
The project will continue by analyzing patient experience, adapting educational materials, and evaluating treatment adherence and post-discharge reconsultations.
