In 2025, consummated squatting cases in Catalonia decreased by 20% according to Mossos d'Esquadra, who attribute the decline to faster police intervention and increased social awareness.

Commissioner Alícia Moriana noted that 96% of the 7.110 reports involve usurpation of empty properties, mostly owned by large landlords. Only 4% of cases are classified as home trespass, where police can legally evict occupants without a prior court order.

"In a home trespass case, we can remove these people without needing a judicial order."

Under the Spanish Constitution, the right to an inviolable home covers both primary and secondary residences. While legal procedures for empty buildings can be complex, the Law 12/2023 has introduced faster civil routes to recover possession within two to four months.
