This Friday's strike call is supported by USTEC, CGT, and La Intersindical, unions that saw a 'no' vote prevail with 65.1% in the conducted poll. In contrast, Professors de Secundària has cancelled the stoppage after its members validated the pre-agreement. This strike is the third in the series of work stoppages planned for the third quarter, bringing the total to 17 days of action when including territorial and Platform 0-3 calls.
The new cycle of strikes began on Thursday, May 7, with stoppages in nursery schools and Catalonia-wide days on May 12 and 27. According to the Department of Education's figures, the strike on May 12 had a 34.77% turnout, and the one on May 27 had 28.74%. The mobilizations arose from an initial agreement reached in March between the Department and the CCOO and UGT unions, which USTEC, Professors de Secundària, and CGT did not sign, deeming it insufficient.
The parallel negotiation between the non-signing unions and Education culminated last Friday with a pre-agreement. Although USTEC, Professors de Secundària, CCOO, and UGT signed it, USTEC initiated a consultation with CGT and La Intersindical. The result was a rejection by 65.1% of participating teachers (60,686), compared to 34.9% who voted in favour (21,184).
The pre-agreement includes improvements such as a new salary supplement that will reach 173 euros by 2029, the creation of 5,000 professorships in two years, a 30% increase in the specific complement over three years, and approximately 6,400 allocations for inclusive education within four years. USTEC advocates for continued mobilization to improve the deal, while seeking consensus with other unions on future actions.
This Friday's protests will be concentrated in Barcelona with three columns converging at the Arc de Triomf to begin a unified demonstration. The Minister of Education, Esther Niubó, has expressed the Government's commitment to implementing the pre-agreement and has called for reflection from the unions, although USTEC has already announced it will not attend the meeting scheduled for this Friday.
