The Department of Territori, Habitatge i Transició Ecològica has initiated the tender process for the repair of a 219-meter section of the service road at Barca Maria beach in Badalona. The project, budgeted at 349,942 euros, addresses the damage caused by Storm Harry in January 2026, which resulted in a severe maritime storm with waves exceeding four meters.
The mayor of Badalona, Xavier Garcia Albiol, described the event as "the worst storm to have ever ravaged the promenade in the city's entire documented history," highlighting the promenade's unusability and the disconnection with the municipalities of the Maresme region. This storm caused numerous damages to municipal and supramunicipal infrastructures, particularly affecting Barca Maria beach, its promenade, and the underground passage.
The works, tendered under emergency procedures with an offer deadline of July 6th, aim to ensure safety and prevent further damage from potential future storms. The repair includes restoring the road with reinforced concrete pavement, an artificial aggregate base layer, a retaining wall, and a wave breaker to dissipate the sea's energy. Public lighting and water supply installations will also be replaced.
Furthermore, protection for the Llevant wastewater collector, which also sustained damage, will be addressed. Protection for the R1 commuter train line will also be considered, for which ADIF has already constructed a dike. Once awarded, the works are expected to be completed in approximately three months, before autumn.
