The Tourist Apartment Association of Costa Daurada and Terres de l'Ebre (AAT) has voiced its opposition to the tourist tax increase approved this Wednesday by the Catalan Parliament.

The association describes the measure as disproportionate and warns it will negatively affect the sector's competitiveness. They argue that the price hike will be felt most by families and domestic travelers, potentially driving them to alternative destinations outside of Catalonia.

"The tourist tax hike means transferring the cost of public policies to the visitor, especially families who will see the price of their holidays increase."

Industry leaders also pointed out that while Barcelona might see a smaller impact, other regions in Catalonia could face a significant drop in tourism. Furthermore, they criticized the fact that illegal rentals do not pay the tax, creating unfair competition for regulated businesses.
