As many as 192 municipal workers have answered the call from the government of Jaume Collboni to join Districte 11, an international cooperation initiative by Barcelona City Council. These volunteers will focus on technical and awareness-raising tasks to support Gaza, Ramallah, and Bethlehem.
Mayor Jaume Collboni thanked the workers for their commitment, highlighting their capacity to contribute knowledge and experience to this "just cause." The volunteers will collaborate with Palestinian administrations in areas such as economy, urban planning, security, care, data, and public management, primarily remotely from Barcelona.
Employee participation will be limited to a maximum of four hours per month during their working hours, and they can also join awareness campaigns and cultural activities outside of work.
The majority of volunteers are women (66%) and come from social areas. Of the 192 participants, 106 have signed up for technical tasks, 15 for the volunteer network, and 71 for both.
This collaboration has already yielded practical results, such as training provided by professionals from the Child Development and Early Intervention Centre (CDIAP) of Ciutat Vella to nurses, doctors, and social workers in Palestinian refugee camps, offering ongoing advice and support.
