Former Barcelona mayor Xavier Trias has positively assessed the potential candidacy of Jordi Martí Galbis to lead Junts in next year's municipal elections in the city. Martí Galbis, president of Junts' municipal group in the City Council, recently formalized his intention to run for mayor.
Trias highlighted that Martí Galbis, who has been a key figure by his side for decades, represents an "example of reaching the top through titanic effort." The councilor, a law graduate, has developed much of his political career at Barcelona City Council since 2011, holding positions such as Councilor for Presidency and the Sants-Montjuïc district during Trias's term (2011-2015). Previously, he served as chief of staff in the Catalan Government's Department of Health and then the Department of Presidency, with Trias as minister.
Trias's statements come after Josep Rius, backed by Carles Puigdemont, withdrew from running as a candidate given the current scenario, citing the need to avoid internal confrontations and promote a renewal project. Although Trias agrees with Rius on the importance of generosity, he believes Martí Galbis's candidacy does bring an element of renewal.
If no other candidate emerges, Martí Galbis might have a clear path. However, Jaume Alonso-Cuevillas has left the door open for his own candidacy, and some Junts district presidents in Barcelona hope Rius will reconsider his decision.
