The railway operator Renfe has dismissed two employees at Sants station in Barcelona after discovering they were issuing free tickets for themselves and their relatives throughout 2025.

An internal investigation revealed that the workers fraudulently used a specific code known as sin percepción (no charge). This system is strictly reserved for exceptional passenger incidents. By bypassing the required supervisor authorization, the employees secured Premium and Comfort class seats at no cost.
At least 70 irregular transactions were detected. The scheme involved issuing low-cost tickets, such as Barcelona-Girona, and later exchanging them for expensive trips to Madrid, Valencia, or southern France, often exceeding 100 euros in value.

"There is no unequal treatment or decisions conditioned by factors unrelated to the facts or applicable regulations."

The case has sparked internal controversy as only two out of six investigated employees were dismissed. Among those not sanctioned is the son of the Human Resources general director, leading to complaints of favoritism among the staff at the Barcelona hub.
