The project, named 'SmartBin', consists of an automatic recycling system that uses artificial intelligence to classify waste. This innovation would allow users to dispose of all their trash in a single location, with the AI handling the initial separation to facilitate subsequent processing at recycling facilities.
“"The system would allow for effortless recycling, by throwing all waste in one place, where the AI would classify and sort the waste so it can then be properly separated at recycling facilities."
The research was developed over a year as part of the high school research project, although the student began to show interest in this topic during his fourth year of ESO (secondary education).
The student will be one of only two representatives from Spain at the international Regeneron ISEF fair, which will take place in Phoenix from Friday, May 10 to May 15. This opportunity was earned by winning first prize at this year's Exporecerca Jove, the only national competition that grants access to this prestigious international event, which awards approximately 9 million dollars in prizes.
