The award, presented by the European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (ECCOMAS), recognizes outstanding contributions in computational mathematics and computational engineering sciences. Curbelo was nominated by the Spanish Society of Applied Mathematics for her research related to geophysics and fluid dynamics.
Curbelo is currently involved in the JetLag project, alongside researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Harvard University. This project has developed a new method for monitoring jet streams, treating them as transport barriers. This approach has allowed for the reconstruction of 85 years of atmospheric history, and the researchers are now studying how jet streams evolve in an increasingly warmer climate with more extreme weather phenomena.
Jezabel Curbelo is a professor in the Department of Mathematics at the UPC, a member of the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM), and teaches at the Escola Tècnica Superior d’Enginyeria Industrial de Barcelona (ETSEIB) and the Facultat de Matemàtiques i Estadística (FME).
She has received numerous previous accolades, including the National Research Award, a Leonardo Grant, and an L’Oréal-UNESCO ‘for Women in Science’ award.
