The Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) has announced the opening of a new social welfare research center, named Àgora, to be located at Barcelona's former Mercat del Peix, expected to be operational by mid-2028.

This project, involving an investment of approximately 20 million euros funded by Incasòl, will occupy an 8,000 square meter building. Construction is set to begin this summer, with the goal of housing a hundred researchers once fully operational.

"It's not just about diagnosing a problem, but about taking action and proposing solutions."

Laia Nadal · Rector of UPF
The Àgora center will distinguish itself with its 'do tank' approach, aiming not only to diagnose problems but also to propose concrete solutions. Its research will focus on major current social challenges, such as labor market needs, housing issues related to youth emancipation, and intergenerational inequalities, always with a focus on youth.
Three main programs will be developed: one dedicated to youth, another on justice (focused on rights and duties to reduce inequalities), and a third on resilience (how to face and survive major crises, such as health crises). The Àgora building will be one of three research centers to be installed on the 45,000 square meter site of the former Mercat del Peix, alongside the Parc de Recerca Biomèdica de Barcelona (PRBB) and the Institut de Biologia Evolutiva. Construction of the PRBB, dedicated to precision medicine, began a few weeks ago.
