Young women in the Barcelona province are driving the transition to greener transport, with a 10% decrease in private car journeys over the last decade according to official mobility data.

The Working Day Mobility Survey (EMEF), conducted by the Metropolitan Transport Authority (ATM), shows that women under 29 now use private vehicles for only 20% of their trips, down from 30% in 2015.
Currently, over 70% of journeys made by women in Catalonia rely on public transport, walking, cycling, or electric scooters. This group has become the primary driver in abandoning private cars in favor of more sustainable urban alternatives.
Despite this progress, a significant gender gap remains in cycling. While women account for 30% of cyclists within Barcelona city, that figure falls to just 18% in the wider metropolitan area, highlighting challenges in regional infrastructure.
