This decision by the Government of Catalonia came at a critical time, following reports of a slight increase in Covid-19 cases at key facilities such as the Hospital de Mataró in September 2020.
The budget increase was part of a broader set of emergency measures being considered, including potential restrictions such as prohibiting smoking in public streets and on terraces to curb community transmission.
The necessity for immediate funding was underscored by localized outbreaks, notably the one detected at the El Mirador de Mataró nursing home in August 2020, which affected 32 individuals.
The crisis management also involved legal challenges; earlier that year, a judge overturned the mandatory home confinement order for Covid-19 positive residents issued by the Mataró City Council on July 23, 2020.
