The Casal Catòlic de Sant Andreu hosted the premiere of the operetta The Mikado by Gilbert and Sullivan, the third successful collaboration between La Lírica and the Municipal School of Music.

This production marks the third time that La Lírica de Sant Andreu and the Municipal School of Music of Sant Andreu have joined forces, following the successes of Les Misérables (2023) and Beauty and the Beast (2024). The work, a masterpiece of English operetta, was performed entirely in Catalan and featured a live orchestra, filling the hall of the Casal Catòlic.
The plot is set in the fictional Japanese city of Titipú, where the young Nanki-Poo, the disguised son of the Mikado, flees a forced marriage to seek his beloved Yum-Yum. The plot is complicated by the presence of Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner, generating a succession of romantic entanglements and deceptions. The work uses characteristic British humor to ridicule the absurdities of power and bureaucracy.
In the pit, the EMMSAmble orchestra, composed of seventeen young musicians between 14 and 20 years old from the Sant Andreu School of Music, performed the score under the direction of Edurne Vila. In total, more than eighty people, including performers, musicians, and technical staff, brought the production to life.

"It is an exceptional training opportunity, because the students do exactly the job that professional musicians do when accompanying a show, and it is a task that can only be learned by doing it."

The president of La Lírica, Marc Calvo, highlighted the team's dedication to “growing local projects”. Actor Pol Calvo added that the collaboration with the music school makes the “show feel more alive”. Upcoming performances are scheduled for Fridays 21 and 28, Saturdays 22 and 29 at 9 p.m., and Sundays 23 and 30 at 6 p.m. at the Casal Catòlic.
