The C-16, the road with the highest mortality rate in Catalonia's central network, registered 14 fatalities last year, including several serious head-on collisions during the Christmas holidays on the stretch between Berga and Bagà.

Although traffic authorities have announced an overall reduction in mortality on central roads, the C-16, especially the section leading to the Cadí Tunnel, remains the road with the highest accident rate, surpassing the C-55. This road accumulated 14 fatalities during the past year.
The toll during the Christmas holidays was particularly tragic, with a total of eleven people injured in multiple crashes. A head-on collision in Cercs left two children critically injured, admitted to Parc Taulí and Vall d'Hebron, along with a woman. Other injured individuals were transferred to centers such as Althaia and Mútua de Terrassa, mobilizing eight fire trucks and nine ambulances.

The majority of fatalities and serious injuries occur on conventional double-circulation roads like this one.

These serious accidents are mostly concentrated on the conventional double-circulation road section between Berga and Bagà. Criticism focuses on the fact that if the extension of the highway to Bagà, announced repeatedly, were a reality, these head-on collisions would not have occurred, as the road is obsolete for the traffic volume it supports.
In addition to the high accident rate, traffic on the C-16 was affected by road closures. Recently, farmers maintained a blockade on the highway near Berga in protest against the EU-Mercosur agreement. An incident was also recorded in La Nou, where a truck tore down tunnel lights, causing another traffic disruption.
