The Bagà City Council will begin in 2026 the first phase of rehabilitation of the old asylum, with an investment of 790,000 euros, to consolidate its structure and transform it into a public services center for the municipality.

The project, approved in November 2025, foresees the integral transformation of the building, currently disused, to ensure its safety and halt its deterioration. This initial stage will focus on consolidating the building's framework.
The planned actions include dismantling the current roof and emptying the interior of the different floors to sanitize the entire infrastructure. One of the notable interventions will be raising the roof by 60 centimeters and constructing a new facade at the rear of the building.
To preserve its heritage, the hydraulic mosaics from the first floor, dating from the 1920s, will be recovered and relocated to the ground floor. The interior floors will be reconstructed using cross-laminated timber panels, a material that provides structural lightness and thermal efficiency. A new service core will also be created to centralize supplies and vertical communications.
The financing for this first phase primarily comes from the Diputació de Barcelona, which has granted aid of 300,000 euros, supplemented by 290,000 euros from the General Investment Plan. Additionally, the Bagà City Council has requested a cash advance of 200,000 euros, to be repaid over 10 years with 0% interest.
This initial investment covers less than a third of the project's overall budget, which exceeds 2.5 million euros. Therefore, the council continues to seek new funding lines for future phases.
The intention is for the old asylum to become a multifunctional facility housing the municipal archive, the library, a coworking space, a computer room for public use, premises for entities, and versatile rooms for events and exhibitions. The ground floor will also host the local tourist information point.
