The Plaça de les Cols, located between the Mercat Municipal, Carrer del Balç, and the rear of the Catalunya cinema, is set to become one of the new central spaces in Berga's old town. The area, which has hosted cultural activities like the Patum de les Andròmines and the Porronada, has also experienced periods of degradation, particularly on Carrer Balç.
The Mercat Municipal, currently with only two active stalls, is a key point of the project. The intention is to convert it into a reference car park for the old town, with 100 spaces spread over two floors. On the upper floor, the feasibility of a community facility or commercial premises will be studied.
Another project included in the Pla de Barris is the rehabilitation of the building at Carrer Balç number 11 to turn it into a block of five social rental housing units. The works, with a budget of 638,804 euros, involve changing the roof and the interior layout.
In parallel, before the end of the year, a reform of the Plaça de les Cols itself will be carried out, with a budget of 472,000 euros. This action, which does not depend on the Pla de Barris, will expand the square by 140 m2, adding green space and changing the paving.
Finally, a modification of the Municipal Urban Planning Plan (POUM) will be made to guarantee the future of the Catalunya cinema and its cultural uses, providing security to residents affected by the old plan.
