More than 130 companies in the industrial estates of Berguedà have regularized their status to continue using the public waste collection service by paying the mandatory local tax.

As of March 1st, the Regional Council has implemented a strict distinction between waste types. Public services are now legally limited to collecting household-assimilated waste, such as food scraps, paper, and packaging from office activities.
Industrial waste resulting from production processes—including chemicals, oils, and scrap materials—is strictly excluded. By law, companies must hire authorized private contractors to handle these specific materials, as they cannot be processed by public utilities.

"We are obliged to collect domestic-assimilated waste, but we cannot collect what the law does not allow us to."

The transition follows a months-long information campaign where officials visited every company in the region's industrial zones. This personalized approach allowed businesses to either opt-out or update their equipment to comply with the new regional waste management framework.
