The incident occurred in building number 10 on Carrer del Carme, where the roof collapsed inwards, without debris falling into the street or affecting the second floor, which was the only occupied one. The Local Police preemptively cordoned off the street and asked the sole resident to leave the dwelling for safety.
Municipal technical services will need to determine the exact causes of the collapse and the structural impact on the building in the coming days. The incident follows a strong storm yesterday afternoon, which dropped 54.6 mm of rain in Berga, adding to the intense rainfall of early August.
This block, considered one of Berga's so-called 'ghost houses', has suffered several incidents in recent years. Two years ago, in March 2024, a fire affected the building's staircase, which was already damaged. Previously, in 2020, part of the facade of numbers 6 and 8 on the same street collapsed, forcing the evacuation of ten people.
The buildings at Carrer del Carme 6, 8, and 10 are abandoned and lack maintenance. Building number 10, consisting of a ground floor and four apartments of 50 m2 each, is for sale for 153,800 euros, with the caveat that it is occupied. Until today, the second floor was inhabited by a single man, after a family had previously moved in.
