Santa Maria de Merlès has suffered severe consequences following the heavy rains that fell in Berguedà on the afternoon of Corpus Christi Thursday. The Merlès stream overflowed, causing significant damage to most of the bridges crossing it, sweeping away large trees and vegetation from the riverbanks.
The mayor of the municipality expressed the residents' shock at the scale of the storm, noting that "there are residents over 80 years old in the village who have been terrified because they have never seen such a monstrosity." This Friday, cleanup efforts began to remove trees and restore communication in the most affected areas, where some residents had been completely cut off.
Several houses near the stream have suffered significant damage to their ground floors, with furniture rendered unusable by the flooding.
The town's bridges have been particularly hard hit. According to the mayor, "all the bridges have been damaged, more or less." The La Molina bridge was completely swept away by the water's flow, and eyewitnesses report that the water at times rose two meters above the bridges. The Sant Martí de Merlès bridge, a historical landmark and "symbol of the town," although not completely devastated, has suffered considerable damage.
The City Council plans to activate all possible avenues to repair the damage, a task that the mayor already anticipates "will not be easy at all."
