Traditional 'Quines' solidify as the major social and festive event in Berguedà

Hundreds of attendees gather in the region's halls, where the social and recreational aspect outweighs the game itself.

The traditional Christmas 'quines' have become a key social gathering point in Berguedà, drawing hundreds of attendees to municipalities like Berga and La Pobla de Lillet since December 20.

The popularity of this tradition has grown exponentially, with the Quina Berguedana, organized by five sports clubs (including CE Berga and Handbol Berga), gathering up to 800 people at the Pavelló Vell de Berga. This quina, held on December 20, officially marks the start of the holiday season in the region.

"It has become something more recreational and festive, like a concert. More than going to play, people go to have a good time."

Marc Pons · President of Handbol Berga
In addition to the large quina in Berga, the season extends into January with events organized by the Comissió de Festes de Vallcebre, the Diables del Clot de l’Infern de Puig-reig, the cultural group Tres Pinyes de Gironella, and the Club de Patinatge Artístic Cercs. The Penya Blaugrana de la Pobla de Lillet also organized a quina to celebrate its 30th anniversary.
Organizers agree that the main purpose of the 'quines' is no longer the game itself, but its social function. Blai Minoves, winner of the 2,000 euro trip prize at the Quina Berguedana, highlighted that they attend every year because it is "a good experience," regardless of the prizes won.
For many local entities, these events are a vital source of income. Marina Salvador, a member of La Brama de la Pobla de Lillet, explained that the funds raised are used to improve school facilities and finance local activities. Organizations in Berga, La Pobla de Lillet, and Montmajor greatly appreciate the collaboration of local businesses that provide the prizes.
