Around 200 people were evacuated from the Club Poliesportiu de Puigcerdà on Sunday afternoon after a carbon monoxide leak mildly poisoned 34 attendees during a hockey match.

The incident occurred at the ice rink, where a hockey match was taking place. The source of the toxic gas was located in the ice resurfacing machine, which operates using butane gas. Lack of ventilation or inefficient combustion led to the accumulation of carbon monoxide, as confirmed by Mayor Joan Manel Serra.

"Combustion is done with butane gas, and if there is not enough ventilation or it burns inefficiently, it accumulates. This Sunday there were three roller hockey matches, and this entails several passes of the machine"

The Bombers de la Generalitat (Catalan Firefighters) received the alert at 5:22 PM and deployed five units to the facility. The Sistema d'Emergències Mèdiques (SEM) activated ten ambulances to treat the 34 mildly poisoned individuals, who were given oxygen masks.
Only three of those affected were transferred to the Hospital de Cerdanya, as their intoxication index slightly exceeded 20. The rest were treated at the sports center itself. Mayor Joan Manel Serra highlighted the rapid response thanks to the installed detectors.
The incident forced the closure of the entire sports complex, including the swimming pool, and the suspension of Sunday's activities. Protecció Civil activated the pre-alert phase of the PROCICAT plan. This event recalls a similar incident in 2022, when 24 people had to be hospitalized, which led to the installation of the current detection systems.
