The Puigcerdà Volunteer Firefighters will officially end their service on April 1st, marking the conclusion of a 165-year history in the Cerdanya region due to a lack of generational relief.

Station chief Quim Arenas confirmed that the decision was made voluntarily by the members. The increasing workload in the Pyrenees region, especially during snow seasons and long weekends, has made it impossible for the 14 current volunteers to balance their duties with personal lives.

"We were born in 1861 as volunteers and we want to end as volunteers."

The Generalitat will replace the volunteers with a professional fire station staffed by up to 30 career firefighters. A tribute ceremony is planned for May 9th to honor the brigade's long-standing commitment to the community, which has earned them the Creu de Sant Jordi award.
