The Montblanc City Council estimates that the theft of fifteen taps from public fountains last Wednesday, February 18, will cost the public treasury between 4,000 and 5,000 euros.

The theft targeted 15 out of the 20 fountains in the town center, including the 18th-century Font Major and the Mare de Déu de la Serra sanctuary. Local residents alerted Aigües de Montblanc after discovering water gushing from the damaged structures early in the morning.

"It will be very difficult to repair the fountains with the original taps because some are no longer made."

A formal complaint has been filed with the Mossos d'Esquadra police force. Authorities suspect the copper taps were stolen to be sold on the black market, emphasizing that the historical damage far outweighs the potential profit for the thieves.
