Environmental groups and residents of the Les Garrigues region have denounced the company General d’Olis i Derivats for alleged excessive atmospheric emissions and foul odors, requesting urgent measures from the authorities.

The platform Ipcena and the association Aturem la incineradora de Juneda have focused on the company General d’Olis i Derivats, located in Les Borges Blanques, warning of a significant increase in its atmospheric emissions. According to the entities, the company's activity, dedicated to olive pomace extraction, has reportedly increased by 200% in recent years, exceeding authorized limits for olive pomace oil production.
Faced with this situation, environmental and neighborhood groups are demanding that authorities implement sanctioning measures and, if the situation does not improve, consider closing the plant. The spokesperson for Ipcena, Joan Vázquez, stated that the continuation of activity under these conditions could "compromise the health and lives" of the area's residents. A dozen people staged a symbolic protest in front of the facilities, halting truck traffic for half an hour.
Complaints about foul odors, affecting towns such as Juneda, Castelldans, Les Borges Blanques, and Arbeca, were previously forwarded to the Síndic de Greuges (Ombudsman). Recently, the issue has been escalated to the Oficina de Gestió Ambiental Unificada (OGAU) of the Departament de Territori, which must now assess the situation and conduct an inspection.
Environmentalists are calling for a drastic reduction in emissions, arguing that the industry is not only failing to reduce them but is increasing them. Joan Vázquez has requested the opening of disciplinary proceedings and that "the right to health and the environment be prioritized over the selfish interests of these companies." Residents like Isabel Mateus, from Juneda, have confirmed the worsening of the odors, which now extend for ten months of the year, making coexistence with open doors "unbearable."
Sources from General d’Olis i Derivats have limited themselves to stating that the company "complies with current regulations," implicitly denying the accusations made by environmental entities and affected residents.
