The capital of Garrotxa has reviewed the first six months since receiving the distinction awarded by ACES Europe. This recognition, which makes it the first city in Girona to achieve it, was presented in Brussels in late 2025.
During this period, various activities have been organized to promote sports practice. Fifty users have participated in challenges such as marches and routes to explore the surroundings, and around 300 people have tried disciplines like capoeira, spinning, or kangoo power in free open sessions.
The 'European City' lecture series has been particularly popular, attracting over half a thousand attendees across five sessions. These talks have covered topics such as the efficiency of sleep in training and the role of parents in children's sports.
Olot has also hosted major Catalan competitions, including the Absolute Catalan Tennis Championship, the Catalan Women's Hockey Championships, and the Senior Catalan Basketball Championships. Until the end of the year, more state and international events are expected, such as the 8th International Table Tennis Open and the XXV Olot City International Chess Open.
Aniol Sellabona, the Sports Councillor of Olot, has positively assessed the initiative, highlighting the success of the lecture series which is intended to be consolidated. The governing team considers sports activity a strategic axis beyond 2026.
The year as European City of Sport will also bring improvements to sports facilities, with a budget of 1.5 million euros. The creation of a new space for artistic gymnastics and the renovation of changing rooms at the basketball pavilion and Sant Roc field are planned.
