Torrential Rain and Severe Weather Alert for Pyrenees and Lleida

Civil Protection warns of possible intense rainfall, strong winds, and hail in several Catalan regions starting Monday midday.

Civil Protection has issued alerts for torrential rains and severe weather phenomena in northwestern Catalonia, particularly affecting Alt Urgell, La Noguera, and Pallars Jussà, starting Monday afternoon.

The Meteorological Service of Catalonia (SMC) forecasts that rainfall could exceed 40 liters per square meter in half an hour in areas such as Alt Urgell, La Noguera, Pallars Jussà, Pla d’Urgell, Segarra, Segrià, Solsonès, and Urgell. These downpours may be accompanied by strong wind gusts, severe weather, and the possibility of hail larger than five centimeters.
In response to this forecast, Civil Protection is keeping the Special Emergency Plan for Floods in Catalonia (INUNCAT) on alert and advises maximum caution regarding mobility and outdoor activities. The Generalitat Firefighters have also urged prudence, especially for activities in natural environments, reminding the public that temperatures can drop drastically during storms.
The risk is considered lower in the rest of the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees, as well as in regions of Lleida, Central Catalonia, inland Girona, Tarragona, and Terres de l’Ebre, where precipitation up to 20 liters per square meter in 30 minutes is expected. The storm's intensity is forecast to gradually decrease by evening and early morning, although it may still affect the northwest quadrant.
The Catalan Water Agency (ACA) does not anticipate significant increases in river flows, although accumulations exceeding 40 liters per square meter could affect ravines and streams. The Ebro Hydrographic Confederation (CHE) indicates that the Ebro basin in the Lleida regions might be the most impacted, despite the rivers having high capacity.
Civil Protection has also noted the possibility, albeit with low probability, of downpours exceeding 60 liters per square meter in half an hour in the same affected areas, although the precipitation is not expected to remain static.
