The new archaeological campaign at the Puig del Castellar site in Cassà de la Selva has begun today, with the goal of further advancing the understanding and recovery of this heritage space. The work, directed by the University of Girona (UdG), will last for three weeks, until November 3rd, and involves a team of seven professional archaeologists.
The main objective is to delineate the settlement and connect the two previously excavated areas. Archaeologists will trace the contour of the hilltop to identify the defensive wall circuit and document structures adjacent to the walls.
This campaign is part of a broader research project studying the influence of surrounding Iberian settlements on the foundation of Roman Girona, driven by the research group at the University of Girona.
The excavations are made possible by an agreement between the City Council of Cassà de la Selva, the Provincial Council of Girona, the Consorci de les Gavarres, and the University of Girona. This agreement ensures continuity of interventions until 2029, with at least four consecutive archaeological campaigns, and involves a joint investment of 120,000 euros.
The Councilor for Economic Promotion and Tourism, Àlex Font, highlighted the importance of collaboration between administrations to understand local origins and enhance this heritage site for future generations.
The Puig del Castellar site, declared a Local Cultural Asset (BCIL) since November 20, 1991, was first explored in 1964. Over the years, sections of walls, buttresses, attached dwellings, and storage silos have been unearthed. Depopulation is estimated around the 1st century BC, with possible intermittent occupation until the 1st century AD.
