The Department of Agriculture has paid 1.25 million euros to 13 irrigation communities in the Girona counties to offset the costs of adapting to the 2024 drought.

The Department of Agriculture distributed a total of 2,865,541.90 euros to 23 irrigation communities affected by the 2024 drought episode in Catalonia. Of this amount, 1,257,266.39 euros, representing nearly 44% of the total, are allocated to 13 files covering 89 municipalities in the Girona demarcation.
This call, published in 2025, aims to compensate for the extraordinary expenses that the communities had to assume to guarantee the continuity of the water service amid scarcity. Expenses include increased management costs, minor interconnection works, and facility adaptations for water saving.
The aid in Girona is concentrated in four main areas. Two of these are mainly located in the Alt Empordà: the Fluvià-Muga aquifer area (22 municipalities) and the Darnius-Boadella reservoir area (12). A fourth area is the most extensive, covering 50 municipalities spread across Garrotxa, Gironès, and Pla de l’Estany.
The application period was open between September 10, 2025, and October 9, 2025, with 23 applications finally paid. The largest amounts in the Girona demarcation were allocated to the Ter-Llobregat area (1,006,729.37 €). Beneficiary entities now have two years to certify the destination of the received funds.
