The Assemblea Nacional Catalana (ANC) has elected Josep Vila as its new president for the 2026-2028 term, succeeding Lluís Llach, who will now serve as the entity's vice-president.

The constituent plenary session of the ANC's National Secretariat, held this Saturday in Igualada (Barcelona), appointed Josep Vila as its top leader. Vila, who secured 39 out of 58 votes cast, exceeded the two-thirds qualified majority required in the first ballot. The previous president, Lluís Llach, did not seek re-election due to health reasons, as reported by the organization.
The new leadership also includes Ariadna Heinz as secretary and Blanca Currià as treasurer. Josep Vila, born in 1959, is an educator, teacher, and activist with extensive experience in education and public administration, having served as director of the Youth Territorial Services of the Generalitat in Girona and vice-manager of the University of Girona.

"It is what we must do from the civil front, and that is why we must continue working to reposition independence at the center of the debate."

In his initial statements, Vila emphasized the importance of building a new social majority in favor of independence. According to the entity, his proposal seeks a "deep renewal" of the ANC to make it more agile and adapted to the current political and social context.
The new president highlighted the work of the territorial assemblies, considering them "vibrant and well-distributed, capable of mobilizing people and having an impact." He stated that only with a committed citizenry can pressure be exerted on political parties. The defense of the Catalan language and the denunciation of the fiscal, cultural, social, and national exploitation of Catalonia will remain central axes of the organization's actions.
