The Government of Catalonia has moved to revive the Transversal Railway Axis (ETF), a 254-kilometer infrastructure project designed to connect Girona and Lleida through the Catalan hinterland.

The administration led by Salvador Illa has tasked the public company Ifercat with updating the studies for this corridor, originally planned in 2010. The update has a budget of 5.46 million euros and is expected to be completed within 18 months.
The route aims to bypass Barcelona, connecting cities like Cervera, Igualada, and Martorell. This transversal model seeks to relieve congestion in the Penedès and Vallès regions while providing an alternative to the Rubí tunnel.
The mixed-use line will allow passenger trains to reach 250 km/h and freight trains to travel at 140 km/h. Construction could potentially begin by 2030, with the final stage reaching Girona Airport.
