Police forces seized a total of 113,891 counterfeit items in the province of Girona during 2025, a figure representing a 125.8% increase compared to the 50,443 products seized the previous year. This data surpasses the previous historical high, recorded in 2023 with 104,537 items, and marks the highest figure since the Ministry of the Interior began publishing these statistics in 2012.
The significant rise is primarily explained by an increase in textile counterfeits, which rose by 139% to 100,102 items. This means that nearly nine out of every ten products seized in Girona were textile items, accounting for over 91% of the total annual increase. Other categories such as leather goods and accessories grew by 12%, reaching 7,974 units, and footwear seizures surged from 449 to 4,021 products.
The majority of the merchandise was located in commercial establishments, where 67,660 products were seized (59.4% of the total), nearly double the previous year. Private residences were the second point of intervention, with 26,233 items seized.
A large-scale operation against street vending in Roses at the end of August contributed to the high volume, with the seizure of over 20,000 counterfeit products, mainly clothing and accessories. This operation, which led to the arrest of one person and the investigation of about twenty others, highlighted that police efforts are now focusing on warehouses and distribution points, such as homes or garages, beyond direct street sales.
Police activity related to these crimes also increased, with 89 cases against industrial property clarified in Girona in 2025 (a 25% increase) and a 56.7% rise in detained or investigated individuals, from 67 to 105.
Nationally, police forces seized 7,349,839 counterfeit products in 2025, valued at 694 million euros. The increase in Girona (125.8%) was significantly higher than in the rest of Spain (19%). Unlike Girona, where textiles account for 87.9% of items, nationally the main sectors were beverages and food (26.5%) and leather goods (12.7%).
The Spanish Patent and Trademark Office warns that counterfeiting harms legitimate businesses, destroys jobs, and can pose health risks. The Ministry of the Interior points out that violations of industrial property rights are often controlled by criminal networks.
