The Directorate General for Religious Affairs of the Generalitat de Catalunya has released the Religious Map of Catalonia for 2025. This study, which compiles municipal and regional data on regular places of worship for various religious confessions, indicates an increase of 6 centers in the Girona counties compared to the previous year.
This growth in Girona contrasts with a general downward trend across Catalonia over the last five years, during which approximately 180 religious centers have been lost. At the Catalan level, the increase has been 20 centers. The new sites in the Girona province include two Islamic centers, three from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and one Jewish center.
Despite these new locations, the Catholic Church remains the majority confession, accounting for 78% of centers in Catalonia and 80% in the province of Girona. Historically, Catalonia has had a strong Catholic presence, with religious freedom consolidated as a fundamental right by the late 20th century.
In the last five years, the Catholic Church has seen its number of centers decrease from 1,138 to 932. Conversely, the Evangelical Church has grown from 94 to 105 centers, and Islam from 57 to 67. Other confessions such as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Baháʼí Faith, and Judaism have also experienced a slight increase.
The Directorate for Religious Affairs attributes the differing dynamics in the opening of centers to the internal organization of each confession, as well as the increase in immigration over the last two decades, which has fostered greater religious diversity. Places of worship play a key role in the socialization of minorities and in social work, and an increase in interreligious dialogue has been observed.
