The Second Division kicks off this evening with the match between Real Sociedad B and Castellón. Girona FC, one of the clear promotion contenders, will debut at home against Leganés on Sunday (7 PM), having not been in the league since the 2021-22 season.
The Girona team, along with Mallorca and Oviedo, are clubs relegated from La Liga, positioning them as promotion candidates. This objective has been publicly stated by the entire board, including president Delfí Geli, Ferran Soriano, Pere Guardiola, Quique Cárcel, Quique Álvarez, and Cristhian Stuani.
However, the club faces the start of the league with uncertainty regarding the final squad, as the transfer market remains open. Player movements have been limited so far, and they are expected to accelerate in the coming days, posing a risk to sporting planning.
Direct rivals for promotion have been more active. Mallorca has earned over 64 million from sales and has strengthened with players like Josep Cerdà and Adrián Fuentes. Oviedo has also revamped much of its squad, bringing in players such as Estanis Pedrola and Dani Villahermosa.
Other teams to watch include Almería, with García Pimienta as coach, Castellón, Las Palmas, as well as experienced clubs like Eibar, Granada, and Valladolid.
Regarding the new teams in the division, Sabadell, coached by Ferran Costa, stands out for its competitiveness and has signed Pere Pons. Andorra will aim to consolidate its position in the league, while Ceuta will be a rival with symbolic past significance for the Girona club.
