Girona faces Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium tomorrow, January 16, in the match opening the second half of the league season, seeking to extend their surprising unbeaten run at the blue-and-white home ground.

The Catalan derby between Espanyol and Girona marks the start of the second half of the first division season. The blue-and-whites aim to consolidate their position in the upper ranks, while the red-and-whites seek to definitively move away from the relegation zone, although historical precedents suggest the rivalry ignores form or favoritism.
The most surprising fact is that Girona has clearly dominated the last five clashes at the RCDE Stadium since their first promotion to the top flight, accumulating three victories and two draws. The first three duels between the clubs, played over 75 years ago in Sarrià, resulted in local victories in the Copa (Cup).
Among the most notable victories is the 0-1 win in the 2017/18 season with a goal by Timor, and the 1-3 win in the 2018/19 campaign, featuring a brace from Stuani and a goal from Doumbia. Even in the only precedent in Second Division A (2020/21 season), Girona won 1-2 with goals from Yoel Bárcenas and Samu Saiz.
Espanyol has only managed to slightly stem this dynamic in the last two top-flight encounters (2022/23 and 2024/25 seasons), resulting in two draws (2-2 and 1-1). Curiously, in both cases, Girona rescued a point in the final minutes thanks to goals from former 'pericos' like Yangel Herrera and Stuani.
The match arrives with Girona in good away form, having won against Real Sociedad (1-2) and Mallorca (1-2). Despite the recent loss against Barça (0-1), Espanyol remains one of the league's best home teams, having accumulated 19 points at home, just two less than the 21 points Girona has achieved in total this season.
