The project, which commenced in late February, has extended beyond the initially planned schedule of late June. This delay is attributed to adverse weather conditions, including persistent rain, and unforeseen challenges encountered at various points of the structural platform.
During the intervention, 104 beams of the structure have been reinforced, some of which were double. This figure represents nearly a third of the total 340 beams comprising the platform. The primary objective has been to ensure the provisional stability of the square and maintain its normal ongoing use.
The tasks have particularly focused on beams showing the most significant deterioration. In recent days, workers have been active in the section closest to Plaça del Vi, where longer beams required supplementary reinforcement before the intervention could be declared complete.
The commencement of the works involved constructing an earth berm beneath the platform to facilitate machinery access. The need to rebuild this berm in late March due to rainfall was one of the factors contributing to the schedule delay. Additionally, new gargoyles have been installed in the drains to channel rainwater directly into the Onyar river, thereby minimizing contact with the structure and preventing further deterioration.
Despite these efforts, the Councilor for Urban Planning, Sergi Font, has cautioned that the intervention is temporary and that the structure will require more extensive work in the medium term, as it «is not sound». The City Council also plans to implement measures to reduce traffic in the square before the end of the year, limiting it primarily to residents and goods transport.
