Data from the Firefighters body shows that the 483 services in the Girona Emergency Region represent an average of more than 40 monthly operations during 2025. This figure represents a 7.47% decrease compared to the 522 services recorded the previous year, although overall urban fires increased by 4.52%.
By municipality, Figueres leads the Girona ranking with 73 interventions, placing it tenth overall in Catalonia (excluding Barcelona). It is followed by Girona, with 62 services (twelfth position), and Olot, with 49 call-outs. By county, the Alt Empordà concentrates the highest number of operations (160), followed by the Baix Empordà (107) and the Gironès (90).
These incidents, which generated 3,288 services across Catalonia (excluding Barcelona), often have an intentional origin. In Olot, for example, the Mossos d’Esquadra arrested a 27-year-old man on December 20 as the alleged perpetrator of burning five containers, and he is suspected of having set fire to 13 more previously.
Container fires, often made of plastic, spread rapidly and can cause serious collateral damage. This includes affecting nearby parked vehicles or, in the most extreme cases, the fire spreading to nearby homes, forcing the Firefighters to allocate additional resources and time to each operation.
