The Generalitat Firefighters in Girona are facing the summer forest campaign with reinforced staff and new vehicles, despite the forest situation being different from previous drought years.

The head of the Girona Emergency Region of the Generalitat Firefighters has explained that the corps is prepared for this summer's forest campaign. The renewal of the vehicle fleet, initiated five years ago, is almost complete, and new firefighter recruitments have allowed for consolidated staffing at various stations. Furthermore, the presence of firefighters in training during the coming months will bolster operational teams across the territory.
Unlike previous years marked by drought, recent rainy months have left the vegetation well-hydrated and reservoirs at levels that move away from a structural drought scenario. However, these rains have caused rapid growth of fine vegetation, particularly on verges, fields, and undergrowth, which could quickly dry out during heatwaves and facilitate the spread of fires.
Given this situation, firefighters emphasize the importance of prevention and the management of forest and peri-urban areas. It is recalled that prevention is a shared responsibility among administrations, emergency services, and citizens, and the necessity for each property owner to keep plots and protection strips around homes in forest environments clean is advocated.
