The measure, which follows an agreement with local residents and merchants, will allow car circulation and parking while the educational center is closed for holidays. From September 1st, coinciding with the start of the school year, the street will revert to being a pedestrian-only space and a safe school environment.
As detailed by the council on social media, the modification was made at the request of local residents. Although the school year ended in June, the summer camp at the Àgora school led to the pacification being temporarily eased during July.
This decision appears to stem from an agreement with some residents and merchants who opposed the permanent pedestrianization of the school's surroundings. The pedestrianization measure was implemented last year after a long campaign by families and the management team of the Àgora school, but it faced strong opposition from other residents who preferred a temporary opening during school hours.
The Parents' Association (AFA) of the Àgora school maintains its commitment to a "definitive, stable, and real pacification" of the area. Families and the school's management had campaigned for years for the space to be pedestrianized, citing several child pedestrian accidents that occurred before the pacification.
The AFA considers it essential for the space to be continuously pedestrianized and advocates for a comprehensive transformation of the school environment to make it more welcoming, safe, and useful for the entire neighborhood, including more pedestrian space, bike lanes, and solutions that meet the needs of residents and the school.
