The Federation of Business Organizations of Girona (FOEG) has released a survey indicating a significant rise in workplace absenteeism across the province. 44.2% of surveyed companies consider this increase to be considerable, while 21.2% have described it as slight. Furthermore, over 45% of businesses rate the current impact of this situation as high or very high.
The primary consequence for businesses is organizational. 76% of surveyed businesses report difficulties in replacing absent employees, and nearly 70% warn of the resulting overload placed on the remaining staff. The rise in labor costs is also a concern for almost 67% of businesses.
In response to this reality, the FOEG urges the Administration to improve the management of work-related absences, calling for greater speed in diagnoses, treatments, and follow-up. 75% of companies request stricter monitoring of absences, and 71.2% seek better coordination among the involved parties: the health system, mutual insurance companies, prevention services, and the businesses themselves.
The survey also identifies various perceived causes of absenteeism. Over 63% of companies point to the inappropriate use of sick leave, and more than 54% cite a lack of employee motivation or commitment. Physical and mental health issues are mentioned by nearly 39% of companies.
However, the FOEG emphasizes that these business perceptions do not necessarily imply fraud and advocates for the protection of properly justified absences. The employers' association also deems it essential to enhance internal prevention and management strategies within companies, as 51% of those surveyed lack specific measures to address absenteeism.
The FOEG believes that reducing the impact of absenteeism is crucial for the productivity and competitiveness of Girona's business sector. The findings of this survey will be incorporated into the White Paper on Workplace Absenteeism promoted by Foment del Treball.
