The Girona City Council approved on March 9, 2026, a decree to evict 25 homeless individuals living in an abandoned factory earmarked for the future Ermessenda Institute.

Mayor Lluc Salellas stated that social services are already working to find housing alternatives for those affected. The goal is to ensure that the eviction does not leave anyone on the streets, with social professionals monitoring the entire process.

"The goal is to guarantee that no one is left homeless as a result of the eviction."

In other business, the council rejected a motion by the far-right party Vox to ban burqas and niqabs in municipal buildings. Most political groups criticized the proposal for promoting exclusionary rhetoric and hate speech.
