On the occasion of World Mental Health Day, the Puig de les Basses Penitentiary Center has carried out various awareness-raising actions. Among them, a graffiti workshop stands out, conducted in collaboration with Neve, from the Heal Hop® project.
The activity took place in the courtyard of the UIC (Compensatory Intervention Unit) module, which houses individuals with criteria of vulnerability, complexity, and specific needs. The proposal consisted of creating a collective mural on a cube structure, using the graffiti technique as a means of artistic expression and participation.
The workshop was born with the aim of offering a different space from the usual activity formats, where participants could express ideas, emotions, and reflections on mental health. Through the creative process, aspects such as personal initiative, creativity, collaboration, and communication were worked on, fostering a positive outlook on emotional well-being.
The initiative also sought to help visualize the importance of caring for mental health and reduce the stigma associated with mental health difficulties. The resulting mural will be temporarily exhibited within the center, featuring messages related to respect, hope, overcoming challenges, and coexistence.
Heal Hop® is an artistic and educational intervention project that uses hip-hop culture as a tool for personal development and creative expression. Within the prison environment, such proposals offer opportunities to explore new forms of expression, strengthen identity, and foster personal growth processes.
In line with this year's slogan for World Mental Health Day from the IAS, the workshop culminated in the creation of a collective mural that highlights the value of expression and listening as fundamental elements for emotional well-being.
