Hospitals in the Girona Health Region recorded 96,687 hospital discharges in 2025, a 4.3% increase from the previous year, reflecting a general rise in healthcare activity.

The year 2025 concluded with a positive outcome for the hospitals in the Girona Health Region, which experienced a significant increase in their healthcare activity. A total of 96,687 hospital discharges were recorded, representing a 4.3% rise compared to the 92,680 registered during 2024.
The surgical field has been one of the main drivers of this growth. Discharges resulting from surgical interventions increased by 5.8%. Furthermore, day surgery, which allows operations to be performed without the need for hospital admission, grew by a notable 8.3%. Currently, this modality accounts for 34.9% of all procedures performed.
Home hospitalization also continues to gain ground, with 1,199 discharges in 2025, an increase of nearly 10% compared to the previous year. This service, already implemented in four centers within the region, including the hospitals of Blanes and Calella, allows selected patients to receive hospital-level care from the comfort of their homes.
According to the Girona Health Region, this care model not only enhances patient comfort and reduces the risk of hospital-acquired infections but also optimizes hospital resources. The Region's manager, Jaume Heredia, highlighted that these figures demonstrate the healthcare system's capacity to meet growing healthcare demands.
