The Girona Police Region has reached 2,107 officers of the Mossos d’Esquadra, the highest figure in available statistical records. The official staff has grown by 218 officers over the last four years, increasing from 1,889 in 2022 to 2,107 counted in 2026, representing an 11.5% rise.
These figures, detailed in a response from the Minister of the Interior, Núria Parlon, to parliamentary questions from PP deputy Juan Fernández, show that the force remained stable between 2022 and 2023, increased in 2024 and 2025, and added 36 more officers this year. The growth is attributed to new Mossos recruitment drives after long periods without new intakes.
The Interior department notes that staffing figures are influenced by retirements, departures, leaves of absence, and internal promotions. In Girona, Catalonia's oldest police region, the retirement of veteran officers and commanders, many of whom began service in the nineties, necessitates combining staff expansion with the replacement of older personnel. This transition is already evident in several police stations such as Figueres, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Olot, and the Regional Traffic Area.
Girona leads in percentage growth of police staff in Catalonia during this period, followed by Alt Pirineu i Aran (10.1%), the Barcelona Metropolitan Region (9.8%), and the Metropolitan South (9.5%). However, Barcelona and Metropolitan South have incorporated more officers in absolute numbers.
Regarding public safety units, responsible for patrolling and incident response, they have gained 47 officers between 2022 and 2025, a 4.3% increase, which is lower than the region's overall growth. These units saw a slight decrease between 2022 and 2024 before regaining officers in 2025.
The Interior department anticipates that figures may change with new Mossos recruit classes. The 32nd class has completed its practical phase, and the 33rd, comprising approximately 1,300 officers, is set to begin theirs soon. The government does not provide municipality-specific data, as officers are assigned to basic police areas that cover multiple towns.
